Wunderwesen im Wasser
"What exactly is plankton?" This question was raised during the Symbiose Studio 2022 by illustrator Kristina Heldmann after hearing enthusiastic “oohs” and “ahhs” from scientists that were looking at water samples from the Mediterranean Sea through the microscope. Back then, Kristina didn't know that the answers to her question would fill an entire book.
For Hallo Plankton! she created beautiful illustrations and wrote stories about what plankton is, who is eaten by whom, what plankton has to do with us, what impact plankton has on the climate and what impact we have on the plankton, and much more. The book was developed in close exchange with leading scientists in the field of plankton research. In interviews, they let us delve yet deeper in their excitement about these organisms, that are inevitable to life on earth, as they provide 50% of our oxygen and make up 90% of the ocean’s biomass.
